Heat pump dryer vs standard dryer: when the savings repay the premium
Heat pump dryers recycle heat instead of venting it, which generally means lower electricity use per load, at a higher purchase price. The payback depends on how many loads you dry.
Worked example
| Standard electric | Heat pump | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy per load | 3.0 kWh | 1.5 kWh |
| Loads per year (5 a week) | 260 | 260 |
| kWh per year | 780 | 390 |
| Cost per year | $132.60 | $66.30 |
| Saving per year | $66.30 |
If the heat pump model costs $600 more, payback is $600 / $66.30, about 9 years. With fewer loads or a shorter ownership period, the premium may not be recovered. With more loads, payback is faster.
Other differences to weigh
- Drying time per load is often longer on heat pump models
- Ventless models can be easier to place, since no outside vent is needed
- Lint filter and heat exchanger cleaning needs
- Capacity and whether it can be stacked with your washer
